The best combat games are the ones that have a story. There's nothing more satisfying than playing through a game and feeling like you're in control of your destiny. Here are some great games with amazing combat systems:

Is a good storyline essential for combat games?

The best combat game has a well defined storyline, that backs up all the action in the game. Without a story, the combat game could just become an endless shooter.

Combat games are best when they have a storyline to back up all of the action in them. Without a narrative arc or any other reason for me to be playing through these levels besides getting from one end to another, I might as well go play Halo instead and shoot aliens on my way there.

One game that does this particularly well is XCOM: Enemy Unknown (2012). Players control troops who must battle against invading Aliens during their turn-based missions which take place over many months and years of gameplay time.

Anyway, a good story compliments combat well, and a combat game without plenty of action is pretty boring.
